This days there is lot more hype about web3. Due to hype there is lot more information overloaded in web3. I’m learning in this space as well, and I know the struggle to get some pure and curated knowledge about it is hard to find, so I decided to start writing about this, and try to provide good curated knowledge in this space. So now I’m going to break down this web3, by differentiating all types of web.

What is web1?

Web1 was initial part of this world wide web evolution. Where developer write some content which is just text and links in it, and basic images. This content was static and only be managed and maintained by developer. Users were only allowed to read it.

Conclusion:
- Static web pages with html and CSS.
- User can only read pre-defined content.

What is web2?

Web2 was beginning of user generated content over world wide web. It can also be referred as participative web pages. Content was displayed according to user wishes and user actions. Best example of web2 can be Meta(previously known as Facebook), YouTube, etc. Here end-users were allowed to read and write content.

Conclusion:
- Dynamic web pages with JavaScript and ajax.
- Users were allowed to read and write content according to their wishes.

What is web3?

Web3 is in it’s initial phases and has begin the revolution of world wide web. Here end-users are able to read, write and own part of the application build over blockchain. Ownership plays the major role in web3. Web3 provides security, transparency and ownership to end-users.

Conclusion:
- Dynamic, secure and transparent web with blockchain.
- User are allowed to read, write and own content in this web.

Why web3 was required? Why web2 can’t provide such security and transparency which web3 provides?

Web3 is required because web2 has some limitations that web3 unlocks. Web2 has centralized data, which means application owners own the data and can manipulate that data according to their wishes. Data is more precious then any other thing now a days, due to world wide web revolutions, almost every human being on this world provides data to several application owners.

How web3 is going to change things that are present in web2?

Data is going to be decentralized. Which means it will be not owned by any one. It’s out there and will be available to everyone, so it provide transparency to all the users and anyone can use that data. As data is decentralized data will be managed by multiple nodes(also known as miners). Nodes will put entries in the blockchain and that will be permanent, as it cannot be reversed. If anybody want’s to change entry then new entry is required to append in blockchain. Blockchain is immutable, which means no one can change any data in blocks, if data is changed then whole blockchain is broken, which is impossible as blockchain protocol maintains the immutability.

Conclusion

Web3 is in initial phase and just a beginning of new world wide web revolution. Webs is more secured, transparent and gives ownership to users, which was not available till now. Data is transparent, so anyone can use it and give new UI/UX and build new application over it. Web3 is going to be the future and will be huge revolution in banking and documentation sectors. New social media platforms will be available which will be known as metaverse.
Web1: Read
Web2: Read and Write
Web3: Read, Write and Own.
